Good questions, straight answers.
How old should my kids be?
Khula works well from about 4 to 16. Little ones need a hand at first; from around 6 most kids sign in and do their chores on their own.
How do the kids sign in?
No phone or email address needed. The family has one account: each child picks their springbok in the family room on any shared device and, if you like, enters their own PIN.
Is the money real?
Yes, but it never passes through Khula. Khula records chores, pocket money, bonuses and goals; you pay out in cash or by EFT, mark it as paid, and Khula keeps track of what is still owed. Pay part and the rest can go into savings, which you keep for them until they spend it.
How does the pocket money work?
You set an amount per child per week, fortnight or month, and give each chore a weight. At the end of the cycle the child earns the share of chores you approved. Bonuses and demerits apply immediately.
What if I forget to approve chores?
Chores still waiting get a 24-hour grace period after the cycle ends, and we email you a reminder. You choose whether unreviewed chores count as missed or are approved automatically.
Where is our family's data kept?
Your family's data (first names, avatars, chores and amounts) is stored in Google Cloud's Johannesburg region. Your sign-in details are handled by Google's Firebase Authentication, which runs from the United States. We store only what the app needs and never sell it. The privacy policy has the details.
What happens when the 14 days are up?
If you haven't cancelled, your card is charged for the plan you picked. You can cancel anytime after that and keep access until the end of the period you've paid for.
Can my partner (or Gogo) use it too?
Yes. The grown-ups share the family sign-in and the parent PIN. Separate logins for each adult are on the way.
