Cookie policy
Last updated 5 October 2026
Cookies are small files a website saves in your browser. Khula also uses your browser's local storage and IndexedDB, which work much the same way, so this page covers all of it: what Khula keeps on your device, why, and for how long. Khula sets no cookies of its own. The only cookies come from Google Analytics, and only if you say yes.
Your choice on this device
Each browser keeps its own answer. You can also clear Khula's data at any time in your browser's settings.
Always on: what keeps Khula working
These are needed for the service you signed up for, so they don't ask first. None of them is used for analytics or advertising.
khula.consent
Local storage
Remembers your answer to the cookie question, so we only ask once.
Kept for 12 months, then we ask again.
khula.theme
Local storage
Light mode, dark mode or the device setting.
Kept until you change it.
khula.profile
Session storage
Who is using this tab: the parent (after the PIN) or one of the kids.
Kept until the tab is closed.
khula.stepup
Session storage
Remembers, for a moment, that you were confirming it's you with Google, so we can say it worked when you come back.
Kept until the tab is closed.
khula.join
Session storage
The invite code you opened, while you sign up or sign in to join a home or link a child's two homes.
Kept until you join or link, or the tab is closed.
khula.join.kind
Session storage
Whether that invite is to join a home or to link a child's two homes, so the sign-up and sign-in pages say the right thing.
Kept until you join or link, or the tab is closed.
khula.onboarding.draft
Local storage
Your answers while you set up your family, so a refresh doesn't lose them.
Kept until setup is finished.
khula.pin.…
Local storage
Counts wrong PIN attempts and pauses the PIN pad after too many.
Kept until you clear your browser data (the count goes back to zero after the right PIN).
khula.rollup.…
Local storage
The date this device last asked the server for today's chores, so it asks once a day.
Kept until you clear your browser data.
khula:goal-reached:…
Local storage
Remembers a savings goal was reached, so the confetti plays once.
Kept until you clear your browser data.
Firebase sign-in
IndexedDB (local storage in Safari)
Keeps you signed in. Provided by Google Firebase Authentication.
Kept until you sign out.
Firebase offline data
IndexedDB, plus a few firestore_… keys in local storage that keep open tabs in step (memory only in Safari)
A copy of your family's chores and money so kids can tick chores on patchy wifi.
Kept until you clear your browser data.
firebase-heartbeat-database
IndexedDB
Which versions of Firebase this browser used on which days, sent with requests so Google can keep Firebase running well.
Kept for the last 30 days of use at most.
Two other companies may set their own cookies, on their own sites, when you use them: Google, if you choose “Continue with Google” to sign in, and Paystack, while you add a card at checkout (for secure payment and fraud checks). Their cookie policies apply to those.
Only with your OK: analytics
If you accept, Google Analytics (through Google's Firebase) counts how parents use the website and the parent screens: which pages are visited, the type of device and browser, the rough location (city level), how you found us (for example a search or a link), and steps like signing up or starting the trial. It never receives names, email addresses, PINs, amounts you type or anything about your children, apart from how many children you added when you set up.
_ga
Cookie (Google Analytics)
A random number that tells one browser from another, so visits can be counted.
Kept for 13 months after your last visit.
_ga_3XNMVP4SC8
Cookie (Google Analytics)
Keeps track of the current visit.
Kept for 13 months after your last visit.
firebase-installations-database
IndexedDB (Firebase)
A random id that links this browser's analytics to Khula in the Firebase console.
Kept until you switch analytics off.
- Analytics never runs in the family room or the kids' screens, even after a yes.
- Google's advertising features (Google signals, ad personalisation and ad data) are switched off. We don't show ads, and we never sell your data.
- Google Analytics doesn't store IP addresses. Google keeps the detailed analytics data for two months and then deletes it.
- Unlike your family's data, which is stored in Johannesburg, analytics data is processed by Google on servers outside South Africa (mainly in the United States), under Google's data processing terms.
Changing your mind
- Use the switch above, “Cookie settings” at the foot of every page of this website, or Settings → Privacy in the app.
- When you decline or switch analytics off, Khula stops sending data straight away and deletes the Google Analytics cookies from this browser.
- We ask again after 12 months, or sooner if we change what we ask about.
- Deleting your account (Settings → Account) also removes everything on this list that belongs to your family from the browser you use, apart from your light or dark choice and this cookie answer, which belong to the device.
- Google also offers a browser add-on that turns Google Analytics off on every website.
Children
Kids never see the cookie question; it is for parents. Nothing a child does in the family room or the kid screens is sent to Google Analytics.
